Month 8: Media Relations

Networking is important in EVERY industry. Image Credit: Zwilling

The Media Relations course was nothing like I thought it was going to be.  I knew at some point we would be taking pictures and video using the products from our launch box, little did I know what the final outcome would be.  When I did my timeline on my webpage my goals were to define a digital journalist vs a traditional journalist, understand how a PR professional needs the community, and how to engage and respond in professional ways.  Throughout the month I slowly learned all of these things, if I didn’t find an answer to something, I knew that if I kept looking, I would find the answer.

I think the most important part of this class was building a media list.  This was a wonderful starting point, networking with a bunch of people in the same industry that know your story will prove to be very beneficial.  Networking is very important in any industry; you honestly don’t know when you might need a helping hand in covering a story that is happening in 2 places at once.

Our final assignment, the video news release, was awesome.  I learned a lot about how to use the digital camera and how to edit b-roll in Adobe Premiere Pro.  I love using new video editing software and learning the ins and outs.  I typically use Adobe Spark, since it is very easy to edit and use, but after using Premiere Pro I am sold and will be using it more often.

The first thing I was told when I signed up at Full Sail University was to network with as many people as possible and to never burn any bridges.  I can honestly say that networking has helped me since day one and I am ever so thankful for every person who has crossed my path.  I was once a quiet person, but ever since I took on the role of Vice President of Social Media for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars I was taken out of my character.  I met so many awesome people from every degree program, and it helped me introduce myself to others.  Never did I see myself working for the Super Bowl in Miami, but now I will be working the Super Bowl this year in Tampa!  I am excited to see where this takes me, now that I will have a Master’s Degree in Public Relations.

Don’t be a copycat

The course Market and Consumer Research Analysis was most definitely an eye opener into the public relations industry.  This course taught me many things from how to analyze professional public relations resources and new marketing resources.  I never thought there would be so many different ways of doing things from identifying the competition, to the target market, and the client.  I think the most important and interesting part of this class was learning how to attract the consumer in a professional way (in the public relations industry).  This was a true eye opener because I learned more about how to read and analyze public data and focus groups.  I wouldn’t say that learning how to present the data that was taught was the tough part in this class.  It was the amount of work put into a piece of writing and watching another student take your writing as their own.  It was infuriating and upsetting to think that this individual thought that they could get away with it.  This has been an ongoing issue since the bachelor’s degree and sadly enough this person has made it this far in the master’s thinking it is okay to copy off of other people.  Well, this month was her last month of copying, I made it known that I was upset and took it a step further, she will not ruin my reputation because she wants to plagiarize.  Plagiarism is no joke.  Plagiarism can be performed in many ways and one thing is certain, Full Sail University preaches it every month.  It really stinks when you do your assignment ahead of time and have to wait until the last minute to post it because you have the fear of someone copying your assignment.  It isn’t fair, but life as we know it isn’t far, as far as I am concerned, I won’t let anyone use my work as their own.  There is only one Roxanne Hafer out there in the world and that is more than enough.

This promotion video was made for my Marketing and Consumer Research Analysis class at Full Sail University. My Capstone client, Farm Share, Inc. was helpful in providing me with the materials I needed for this assignment. Special shoutout to Ashley Moore, Marketing Director for being so very helpful since the day I met her.

Please take a couple minutes, watch my video, and let me know what you think.

All honest feedback is appreciated!

Social Media Metrics and ROI

Social Media Metrics and ROI from what I thought it was going to be was learning how to analyze metrics that describe audience behaviors and attitudes, how to measure trends, traffic, and behaviors, and lastly how to put all of these metrics into a professional planner/binder.

This class taught me the importance of prioritizing objectives and how they are essential to success.  Defining SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound) goals or objectives, setting a benchmark, and setting a timeframe are what success looks like.  Outlining the bigger picture before you even think of the business metrics will help with your campaign.

Three things that stood out to me this month were:

  1. The importance of setting SMART goals, both quantitative and qualitative at the beginning of a PR campaign, also measuring your social media KPIs on the regular rather than weeks down the road, it should be consistent and valid.  This will prevent you from making the same errors over and over.  Communicating to your client (and others) will help a campaign be successful.
  2. Another important piece that stuck out this month was I need to start including some expert articles and asking my followers for advice.  This will get my followers more involved with what I am about and get them communicating with one another.  I also need to list my social media pages in a way that my followers can see them and start following them as well.
  3. Lastly, having a very thorough, well thought-out social media strategy will help you and/ your client for a long time.  A social media strategy should have their channels, who they will reach, SMART goals, topics, post velocity, and formats of posts figured out.  The client should also have some kind of rules set up for engagements or interactions, resources on how much time would be needed prior to posting, a call to action, and most importantly KPIs.  All of these things are very important when putting together a social media strategy.

I think the most important thing that can be taken away from this class is that it is important to stay up to date with high profile clients, such as brand influencers and those in the same industry as my brand.  Collaborations with these individuals over a product or service will show my audience that we are both passionate about our brand and why.  This will also get your (or my) audience engaged in conversations.  Which brings me to the next important thing, sentiment metrics.  These are very important to anyone in the public relations field because a simple comment, phrase, or statement could be misconstrued at any time.  This miscommunication could cause the wrong kind of publicity to my brand/company.  It is very, very important to be on top of things and keep the community well informed of any changes.

Innovative Public Relations Tools and Resources class review

By future Public Relations Professional, Roxanne Hafer

My original expectations of Innovative Public Relations Tools and Resources class were completely off compared to what we were taught.  I originally thought that this class was going to teach us the unique expectations of a P.R. professional in the social media industry.  I thought we were going to dig into the social media pages that we had created in the bachelor’s and use the items provided by Full Sail to create a campaign and get to use our new digital camera.  I also thought that we would be learning the RSS and HTML5 technologies.

Three things that I learned in IPR (Innovative Public Relations Tools and Resources) this month were:

  1. Grammatical errors are common, and the application known as Grammarly (that was used in the bachelor’s degree) is not as effective, and to try using Google Docs.  If you are attending Full Sail University, give the Co-Pilot Center a try, they will give you help with proofreading.  Or network with your classmates, it is always a good thing to have another set of eyes look over an assignment.
  2. Social media pages need to be completely filled out, with profile pictures, background pictures, your city/state, a link to your personal website, and basic information about yourself in order to promote yourself as a P.R. practitioner.  Make sure all of your images are sized correctly.  If you are unsure of sizes, go online and do a search for “social media image sizes”.
  3. Consistency, engaging in conversation, and finding common ground are three popular ways to gain followers.  Those who sit around, complain, and are negative Nancy’s all the time will not get followers or an audience because no one wants to hear someone complain.  It is time to keep it upbeat and positive, the world has enough negativity.

The one thing that this class has taught me as a public relations professional is to keep the conversation going and keep it creative.  Conversations may end but the long-term relationships and unexchangeable, valuable information shared are the priceless moments that never go away.  Gary Vaynerchuk had some words of wisdom in our last discussion post. Be sure to check out this video about online marketing, Stay up to date on all of your social media trends and most importantly, #GetRoxed!

Evernote is Everything in PR

It doesn’t matter how organized or disorganized you are in 2020, as long as you have the application Evernote.  This awesome application is a public relations professionals dream come true, you no longer have to worry about finding a pen or notes from that interview.  Everything is at your fingertips; Evernote is a one-stop-shop for those in the PR industry.  This application allows you to take notes, write down questions and thoughts, record voice memos, save photos, images, and files, and it even allows you to upload your files too!  There is no need to worry about finding a pen that works or some extra paper for an assignment, Evernote is a great place to store that research that you found while on that flight back to your city or town.

Evernote Basic on iPhone is a PR Professionals dream come true. It is free and easy to use. Image Credit: R.Hafer (2020)

Evernote is free to download, though if you’re looking to organize everything, it may cost you.  The application offers a basic package, which is free, this allows the user to take notes, create “notebooks” so you can attach PDFs and documents, and organize clipped pages and images from the internet by date or title, share your “notebook” with others so they can edit your notes.  This basic package has a limited space of 60MB for monthly uploads, 2 devices can use one account, and you can only use this application on a desktop if offline.  The next package that Evernote offers is called Premium, it is $7.99 a month (it is currently on promotion for 40% off, expires 9/16/2020).  This Premium package differs from the basic one, it allows you to forward emails into your Evernote account, scan business cards and create contacts, annotate PDF files, easily search for documents by using text, link Google Drive files, and much more.  The Premium package offers users 10GB of month uploads, an unlimited number of devices can use one account, and this application can be used offline if the user is on desktop and/or mobile.  A perk from this package is that Evernote offers consumer support via email and live chat if any issues should arise.

The third package that Evernote offers to their users is called Evernote Business, this account is $14.99 a month, and made for businesses.  This package offers everything that I had stated before and then some.  Unlike the other two packages offered, this one shares notes and “notebooks” with anyone at your business, allows for your team to work together on assignments or projects, can be viewed as a company bulletin board, and allows an upload of 20GB + 2GB/user.  Just like the Premium package, an unlimited number of devices can use with one account and there is customer support made available through email and live chat.  Evernote is always working on ways to improve the application, the newest beta they are testing is editing notes with others, in real-time.  This is available just for the Business version, for the time being.

The best thing about this application is that it is very easy to use after downloading it.  Simply enter your email, create an account, or enter a password, and you’re ready to go.  Just be careful where you click, you could get put in a Premium package, after all of that Evernote shows you the basics and you’re ready to go.  Don’t forget to link your Evernote with your computer so that way your notes transfer over.  Another great perk is that the Evernote app can connect to the app Slack, and upon typing a command, the post will show up as a note in Evernote.

The worst part about Evernote is the limited access with the Basic plan.  This plan may be free, but the monthly upload limit will fill quickly with images and documents.  Why not take advantage of Evernote Premium and the promotion that is running?  You could very easily turn a bad situation into a good one and save some money (Here’s a secret for the students out there reading this blog, they have a student discount, go to the Evernote webpage and scroll to the bottom.  You’ll see a spot on the bottom left that says Student Discount, you can thank me later).

Evernote Basic on Mac works the same as if using an iPhone, if not easier. Plus it syncs with everthing I have already done on my iPhone. Image Credit: R Hafer (2020)

Evernote can be used by both Windows and Mac users who have the application that give users offline access to their notes.  Android and iPhone users will also have applications ready to access your notes offline, though you will need the appropriate tier of service, as I stated up above.  There is also a web application that works in all browsers (Chrome or Safari), this allows users access to their notes no matter what or where you are.  Not all note-taking apps sync to a computer.

Overall, Evernote is an excellent choice for a public relations professional that is just starting their career or in the middle of it.  This application will be around for a long time since it is easy to use, syncing with other applications, and it is reasonably priced.  So, give it a try, send me a message on one of my socials (listed below), and tell me what you think.

3 Tips to Remain Calm during COVID-19

The feelings of fear and anxiety are at an all-time high during this COVID-19 pandemic.  It can feel inescapable, everywhere you turn it’s right there, from the news to social media.

Here are 3 simple tips to remain calm:

1) Limit yourself to how much time you watch the news and spend reading information about COVID-19.

2) Practice self-love or giving yourself the kind of love you would give to someone else.  You are not alone.  Reframe the way you’re thinking and turn on some music and dance as if no one is watching.

3) Reach out for help.  Help is a simple email or phone call away.  It is nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about, just know that there is always help available.

Legal Aspects of Media Reflection

During this course, I would have to say that my favorite assignment was Week 3: Copyright Registration and Search.  I enjoyed going to the Copyright Office site and learning how to fill out Form TX for one of my articles that I had wrote on my Mastery Journal.  This assignment was my favorite because I had actually felt prouder about the article I had written.  I say this because the article I wrote, #MixerUnited was a moment that I actually saw the possibility that I could be an event planner or someone in the public relations/marketing industry.  Everything that I had learned in the Sports Marketing and Media program and everything that I had learned up until now in the Public Relations program all came together.  The most important piece of advice that I was given while attending Full Sail University was to network with everyone and I am glad that I did, I met some wonderful people along the way.

The knowledge that I acquired this month was a lot, and several notes were taken so if there are any potential legal issues, I will know how to handle them and how to research them if necessary.  This course has provided me with information that will always be changing with the world because the internet is always changing the way things are posted or distributed.
