| The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer The Home Depot has implemented a lot of safety measures since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. Closing stores early, to limiting the number of consumers allowed inside at one time, to promoting social and physical distancing, are just a few changes that this company has instituted. Elvera Edwards, frontend supervisor at The Home Depot for 5 years explains how this pandemic has been a battle for her and her frontend cashiers. “Every day is a struggle for the frontend, I believe The Home Depot has done everything in their power to keep me and my cashiers safe. They provide us with items like non-medical face masks and gloves,” Edwards said. The Home Depot has established many safety measures such as enforcing social distancing with X’s on the ground; showing consumers how far apart they should stand, announcements over the intercom reminding their consumers to practice social distancing, plexiglass shields around their cash registers and specialty areas throughout the store, and adjusting store hours. “We are the last interaction that the consumer gets when shopping in our store, we are by far the busiest department. As a head cashier we are all over the place, running from one end of the building to the other, whether it be dropping off change for a cashier, dealing with an issue, or covering someone as they take a break, Ensuring that our cashiers feel safe enough to do their job is a priority and I try to make sure that if anyone has any issues that they can rely on me to help them,” Edwards says. This home improvement giant offers their associates Covid-19 resources and benefits on their employee portal LiveTheOranageLife.com. Employees can find out information on emergency paid time off, temporary bonuses, mental health counseling, and temporary policies. “I feel safe at Home Depot knowing that I have all the resources in reach. They make sure we are taken care of by providing us with masks, gloves, and sanitizers. Money can be very dirty, and I am thankful that I can clean my hands as often as I like. I also enjoy the extra money on my paycheck now that we can work as many hours as we like, the overtime is sweet. I am aware of all the benefits that my job is temporarily offering me and my fellow coworkers,” cashier Vinny Napolitano says. This company focuses on two priorities, the safety and well-being of their associates and consumers. While the Covid-19 is still unpredictable, this retailer has implemented new procedures and operational changes that has helped sales increase nationwide. “I feel as if The Home Depot has provided me the tools and information, I need to do my job. My upper management team is not in any sorts of distress and they communicate to me and my fellow associates on the daily if there are any updates,” flooring specialist Melyssa Chaney-Daniels says. Hourly cleaning efforts, such as cleaning and sanitizing high traffic areas, shopping carts, telephones, plexiglass shields, and portable devices every 2 hours is a best practice at the Florida City Home Depot store. Every morning prior to the store opening, the associate that is opening the department is handed a sheet of paper that is to be kept at their desk or designated work area. The associate is asked to sign off every 2 hours of when they have cleansed their area and at the end of the day the closing associate is to turn in the paper prior to them leaving. This shows that the departments are taking care of each other and the consumer. “My husband and I never really knew what all Home Depot was doing to keep us safe as consumers until I noticed the cleaning efforts being done. As we were placing an order for some tile in the flooring department, I noticed that Melyssa handed off the portable telephone to another associate and she began wiping down the telephone with what seemed to be a Clorox wipe. She proceeded to work her way around the desk, wiping things down, as she approached the plexiglass, she sprayed it down with what I believed was Windex. The last item she cleaned was the pin-pad, where we insert our credit card and put in our pin. I felt safe knowing that it was germfree and ready for me to enter in my code,” consumer Felicia Walker says. The Home Depot is taking all safety precautions for their associates and consumers seriously because Covid-19 is very unpredictable. Hopefully, as we continue to move forward there will be a better deterrent from this virus. |
